5 Successful Traits Event Planners Can Learn From Pigs

Lunar New Year has started for a while now and are you still wondering how your work life and fortune are going to be affected by this year’s zodiac animal?
Would you believe me if I say, although pigs have traditionally been seen as “dirty”, “lazy” and “unintelligent”, they are in fact among the smartest of all domesticated animals and are even smarter than dogs in some cases? If yes, as event planners, here are 5 things we can learn from pigs to make your career a success this Chinese New Year:
HAVE THE APPETITE OF A PIG
Pigs are easy animals to raise as they eat almost everything, from plants, fruits, to rodents and even small reptiles. That is why they thrive in almost all environments. As a successful event planner, you need to understand and immerse yourself in the different industries, preferences and business needs of your various clients. In order to do so, you can’t be a “picky eater;” a “healthy diet” consists of up-to-date information about what is important for your clients. You need to spend time and consume materials online and offline to stay on top of your game. A well-prepared event planner who can, for instance, provide insights on how to up their clients’ presentation game with technology is someone you want to rely on, again and again.
BE A SOCIAL ANIMAL
Do you think pigs stay with the herd because they are mindless? Think again! Some very smart people who study the behaviors of pigs have found that social behaviors are actually highly developed in pigs.
Newborn piglets already begin to form social dominance relationships with littermates within the first new hours of their birth. In their natural surroundings, they enjoy exploring their environment, socialize and play with their friends. So be social like a pig, but do not hassle others or be pushy.
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY
Now that we have established that pigs are clever, you have to admire how humble and personable they are. Unlike cats, who like to show off and think they are the boss, pigs are down-to-earth and are not afraid to get their “hands” dirty. A dedicated event planner needs to be willing to roll up their sleeves and do the grunt work that successful events require, regardless of how mundane the task is. Multiple research and studies have found that humility is one of the most effective and valuable trait in leadership.
In the world we live in, sometimes it feels almost silly to be humble because after all, we are all trained to “sell ourselves.” But while ego gets you attention, modesty and humility will get you results and success.
OLD (AND YOUNG) PIGS CAN LEARN NEW TRICKS
Search for “smart pig stunts” on YouTube and you’ll see countless videos of seemingly-unintelligent pigs doing flips and tricking other animals! Pigs are highly trainable animals. What about you? Are you open to learning new tricks in and outside of your job? Are you finding mentors to support you or educating yourself in your free time? Don’t know where to start? There are numerous resources to improve your knowledge and to help you keep up with the latest trends in the event planning world. So don’t be lazy; be a pig and learn some new tricks to impress!
FIND YOUR WAY LIKE PIGS DO
Research has shown that pigs have a surprisingly good sense of direction, as they have found their way home over great distances. So what motivates you to keep going forward, and keep reaching for the stars? Is it job success and satisfaction, recognition, or opportunities to do something that you are proud of? Find the right motivation and you will for sure thrive in your everyday business and be less stressed.
MAKE THE YEAR OF THE PIG A HUGE SUCCESS FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS
“I know no other animals [who] are more consistently curious, more willing to explore new experiences, more ready to meet the world with open-mouthed enthusiasm. Pigs, I have discovered, are incurable optimists and get a big kick out of just being,” biologist and Johannesburg Zoo director Lyall Watson wrote.
